The Miracle of the Carpenter by Max Lucado

Loretto Chapel took five years to complete. Modeled after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, its delicate sanctuary contains an altar, a rose window, and a choir loft.

The choir loft is the reason for wonder.

Were you to stand in the newly built chapel in 1878, you might see the Sisters of Loretto looking forlornly at the balcony. Everything else was complete: the doors had been hung, the pews had been placed, the floor had been laid. Everything was finished. Even the choir loft. Except for one thing. No stairs.

The chapel was too small to accommodate a conventional stairway. The best builders and designers in the region shook their heads when consulted. “Impossible,” they murmured. There simply wasn’t enough room. A ladder would serve the purpose, but mar the ambiance.

The Sisters of Loretto, whose determination had led them from Kentucky to Santa Fe, now faced a challenge greater than their journey: a stairway that couldn’t be built.

What they had dreamed of and what they could do were separated by fifteen impossible feet.

So what did they do? The only thing they could do. They ascended the mountain. Not the high mountains near Santa Fe. No, they climbed even higher. They climbed the same mountain that Jesus climbed 1,800 years earlier in Bethsaida. They climbed the mountain of prayer.

As the story goes, the nuns prayed for nine days. On the last day of the novena, a Mexican carpenter with a beard and a wind-burned face appeared at the convent. He explained that he had heard they needed a stairway to a chapel loft. He thought he could help.

The mother superior had nothing to lose, so she gave him permission.

He went to work with crude tools, painstaking patience, and uncanny skill. For eight months he worked.

One morning the Sisters of Loretto entered the chapel to find their prayers had been answered. A masterpiece of carpentry spiraled from the floor to the loft. Two complete three-hundred-sixty-degree turns. Thirty-three steps held together with wooden pegs and no central support. The wood is said to be a variety of hard fir, one nonexistent in New Mexico!

When the sisters turned to thank the craftsman, he was gone. He was never seen again. He never asked for money. He never asked for praise. He was a simple carpenter who did what no one else could do so singers could enter a choir loft and sing.

See the stairway for yourself, if you like. Journey into the land of Enchantment. Step into this chapel of amazement and witness the fruit of prayer.

Or, if you prefer, talk to the Master Carpenter yourself. He has already performed one impossible feat in your world. He, like the Santa Fe carpenter, built a stairway no one else could build. He, like the nameless craftsman, used material from another place. He, like the visitor to Loretto, came to span the gap between where you are and where you long to be.

Each year of his life is a step. Thirty-three paces. Each step of the stair is an answered prayer. He built it so you can climb it.

And sing.

Haven’t been here in a while

Wow, have I really not posted since August of last year? I guess I am overdue!

So much going on and time is just flying by me. I think we are finally feeling like the house is home. There will be lots to do once the weather is suitable for working outside – fencing, gardening, landscaping… I will have to get out the camera and share my adventures once again.

I have been spending the winter volunteering at several of the christian concerts that have come to town. I have signed up to work Winter Jam and am SOOOOO excited! Should be a great day of hearing some of the top groups out there.

I will try to work up something a little more interesting and post again soon. =)

Finally in!!!!

We have been in the house for a little over a week. It still looks like a yard sale blew up in places but the clutter is diminishing. Over the weekend we got the appliances installed and the dining room actually looks usable! I spent all afternoon Sunday installing the master closet organizing system. It is a strange thing when you discover that your husband has 3x as many clothes and shoes as you do. What is up with that?!?!?!

The countdown has started

The mantel is finally finished and the tv installed – and that is a big tv! It’s a 52 inch Samsung… I feel like I’m at the movie theater!
The electrical inspection is passed. The plumbing inspection is passed. We just have the building inspector to get our occupancy permit and we can move in! (yay!!!)

a day off

Clay and I decided to take a day off and play while the kids were away with Grandma and Aunt Teresa in the Smoky Mountains. Our destination – Eagle and Cumberland Falls in Corbin, Kentucky. We spent the afternoon hiking the trails and playing in the water. Unfortunately, my phone is not water resistant and when I slipped and fell in – well… my phone was not happy. I did manage to keep it alive until I could retrieve the photos off of it. Darn. I liked that phone.
Enjoy the pics!

details, details…

The mantel is stained, the tile in the master shower is almost done and the grass seeding is well underway. We have to touch up the paint and get our final inspections completed… are we done YET?

Repent, for the end is near!

We are getting down to the details of finishing the house – so exciting!!!! Just about everything is complete with the exception of the master shower. After my allergic reaction and us not knowing whether it was the tile or not, we have decided to error on the side of caution and have someone finish the shower for us.

“Sink” not, my heart

We managed to pack in working at the house AND making a little free time to celebrate Father’s Day and Clay’s birthday. We have been planning for months to buy a flat screen tv for over the fireplace so there was lots of joking about it being Clay’s present for every occasion for the next two years.

We took the cat over to the house to give him a little pre-view of his future home. He wasn’t too happy about it at first but eventually warmed up to the idea.

All of the sinks are in with water attached, we just have to hook up the drains. I installed all of the locks on the doors and finished making sure all of the interior doors had locks and knobs as well. The contractor will be in tomorrow to rock the fireplace. (I am so excited!) The bracket for the tv will be put up as well. We still have to finish the master shower and carpet the stairs but all in all we are ready for the inspector on Wednesday.

Counter tops

The counter tops came in and were installed last night as well as the floor in the MBR finally being down. The insulation was blown in the attic (very poorly done job, might I add!). The fireplace needs to be rocked, the shower tiled and the sinks put in. Day by day.

Helping Hands Weekend

We had a bit of help this weekend! The guys came out to help install the HVAC units, the fireplace and finish the back deck. I was so very appreciative!

I installed the vanity lights, made a little adjustment to the flooring under the stove and basically piddled about just seeing if I could help anyone. After my little brush with severe allergic reaction, quite frankly I was afraid to mess with the tile. I am not sure what I am allergic to but the tile is what I was messing with that evening. Better safe than sorry!
